I know this isn’t a new release post, but my partner and I had a comment left on the KBL blog. We were pondering whether or not to approve the comment, when it occurred to me that we’d had this store for nearly a year, and it’s more than likely that a lot of you don’t know the reasoning behind the name of our store, or the naming of our products. I know that it’s quite possible that you think we’ve chosen to name most of our designs after pills because it’s clever and unique. Well, sure, that might be a part of it, but that’s not the main reason.
First of all, before Kissed by Lithium came into being, Kissowa had a little shop named “Kiss This” and I had a shop named “Lithium.” One day we started splitting store space, it seems the next day we decided to merge our talents into one shop with a combined name. Thus, Kissed by Lithium was born.
Back then, we only had tees and piercings. Our tees were named as they still are, with whatever is printed on the tee as the name, but our piercings, well I had an idea to have a line of piercings named after pills. Obviously it’s grown from that, but that was our humble beginning.
Some people think it’s simply a gimmick. It’s not, actually. Kissowa and I both have various health issues, and have been on a great deal of the pills in our store. I, personally suffer from manic depressive disorder, severe anxiety disorder, OCD and a touch of a few other things. Kissowa has GAD and suffers from insomnia.
We are not ‘making fun’ or trying to ‘make light’ of anyone’s health issues or the need to take medications. We’ve decided to come to our own terms with our problems by naming our designs after pills. It reminds us that it’s not the end of the road, but perhaps a beginning.
I’ve been on Lithium, I know the effects it can have on your body. I’ve been on so many pills for my mental health problems that I’ve almost become an enigma to my doctors. But over the years, I’ve learned that you can’t see the end of the road, you have to see the new one taking it’s place.
Our brand name and the names of our products help us to remember that there are so many pills out there that perhaps one day we’ll find the ‘magic’ one and that by taking a pill, it’s not a death sentence, but perhaps a salvation.
When we create a beatiful outfit and name it after a prescribed pill, it makes us smile and keep things in a relaxed tone. You don’t have to agree, you don’t have to shop at our store, but don’t come in and assume that we’re making fun of anything, because if we were, we’d be making fun of ourselves.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but we thought this needed to be said.
Twistedly Yours
